I went to pick my car up from the workshop yesterday, the man was on the telephone, I overheard him say: “I’ll take that two-week cruise as I’m about to get some dough,” and then he saw me standing there and said: “I have to go!” He handed me my keys and said: “Your car’s as good as new, it’s lucky that you came in now, before that motor blew, the pistons were all blistered and the valve stems shot to hell, the manifold was old with holes, and ugly plugs as well! “The oil had boiled because it was a lump up in the pump, loose rings had worn the kingpins down and dumped them in the sump, the crankshaft and the petrol tank too rusted to repair, and damn it if the camshaft wasn’t jammed by bearing wear! “Your carby’s far beyond recall, the jets too wet and thin, the diff was iffy, so I fitted pin replacements in, the CV joints were pointy and your front end bent and old, it’s lucky that I stock your make of intake manifold! “I couldn’t take the risk, your disc pads had to be replaced, transmission bolts were faulty and the fluid thick as paste, then third gear nearly broke, then first, and then I lost reverse, I put a whole new gearbox in, as second gear was worse! “Your steering wheel appeared to be in need of special care, the seat belts felt all shot, I got a neat new front-seat pair, the clutch was much the same and all the headlights seemed quite crook, I think the blinkers might be too, but didn’t dare to look! “The pinion rack lacked tension and its screws were all bad news, my alternator tester says that yours had blown a fuse, the bonnet lock was shocking and the doors were poorly done, I changed the hinges, handles too, they’re just like new, old son. “I sprayed the radiator out, and filled the anti-freeze, adjusted all the air-con ports to twenty-three degrees, I nuked the duco with some special crack-resistant wax, you owe me seven thousand bucks, including federal tax!” Considering I’d booked it in to fit a speakerphone, I figured this excessive, but I didn’t like to moan, I wrote a check and drove home feeling like a stupid jerk, the car was running smoothly but the cellphone didn’t work!

The Car: VAG B700 VW Golf Gti MKII

Sales Thread: http://forums.forzamotorsport.net/forums/thread/2738852.aspx

First Impressions: Another Simple but clean paint from the VAG gang, although the angles work well with the old Golfs angular lines. The tune makes the Golf very easy to drive, with a lot of grip and enough speed to do the job and keep you out of trouble.

On the Tracks: Sebring Short saw our first outing together, and I spent a few laps learning the limits of this car which are actually a lot higher than you could guess at. After 7 laps I had a 1:16.779 but I was still finding more time on every lap as I still hadn't found the end of the grip in some turns.

At Suzuka West something held me back from getting the laptimes I should have seen in the VW, maybe it just didn't have enough top end speed. A 1:22.510 was a little on the long side for a lap of the medium track.

Tsukuba Is one of my least favourite tracks for getting decent times, the Golf had plenty of grip and enough acceleration to do better than my 57.765 laptime. I need to practice this track, to get more from the Golf here.

Road Atlanta Short was a very different story from Tsukuba as the VAG tuned car really held on in the turns giving me the confidence to hold the throttle wide open for almost the whole track. A 57.614 laptime was the best of 7 laps, but look for more in reserve as the VW was holding a very tight line on the uphill section where some will push you wide.

Sunset Infield Short showed a lack of top end speed for the Gti as it struggled to better a 1:02.889 in spite of its excellent grip in the corners meaning the speeds could be kept high all the way round. It just lost a little on the straight.

The Verdict: Not much to say about the paintjob, it's clean and simple but works well. The team tell me they keep the designs simple so the young members are able to get involved and change colours for themselves, so we should have some painting talent ready for Forza 5 or 6 as they are starting young. The tune is one I wish I'd had when I was learning to drive cars in Forza, as it has loads of grip, and is very forgiving when you get things a little wrong. It makes for a great car to learn in, and should keep up with you as you improve. From the times in the sales thread this is a demon around the Test Tracks , and from my runs in it the VW feels like it should do well on all the tight short tracks.
